Job Title: Agricultural Conservationist/Project Assistant

Prepared Date: Immediate, Part-time (15-20 hours per week)

Pay Rate: $17-$23 per hour DOE

Background:The Madera/Chowchilla Resource Conservation District, a special district dedicated to resource concerns in and around Madera County, has an immediate opening for a temporary, part-time Ag Conservationist/Project Assistant to help with the implementation and reporting of resource conservation projects that the District and/or its partners undertake under contract with various agencies, organizations and individuals. This position will work under project agreements to help with planning and implementation in Madera County, and will assist with securing additional funding for sustainability. Current projects focus on habitat restoration, soil health, ag marketing, youth education, community outreach, irrigation technology, drought resiliency and other conservation practices. These positions will be flexible.
  • The ideal candidate will have a strong agricultural background, including experience with or knowledge of irrigation practices and systems, mobile farm equipment and tractors, dairy operations, livestock, row crops, permanent crops and basic farming operations.
  • Experience working with soil surveys, soil reports and ArcGIS is extremely helpful.
  • Ag Conservationists must be willing to assist with field work, work professionally and courteously as representatives of MCRCD and NRCS while interacting with private landowners and local, state and federal entities and personnel.
  • Basic computer skills are a necessity, including proficiency with Microsoft Excel and Word. Strong verbal and written communication skills, and experience with grant writing and conservation planning is desired. A college degree is not required, but coursework or prior work experience in related fields is helpful.
  • Candidates must possess, or be able to obtain, a valid driver’s license and proof of insurance. A background check is required upon employment.
  • This position is part-time, temporary, as funding allows. Occasional weekends or evenings may be required with advance notice.
  • This position may provide flexibility around college courses for current students. Current students must be able to commit to a minimum of 20 hours per week, on a routine schedule, during the school year, with an increase to 30 hours per week during the summer.
